ANT AND DEC SPEAK EXCLUSIVELY TO ITV’S THIS MORNING ABOUT NEW SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY SERIES, NERVES, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, OBE'S AND PLANS TO MARK THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF SM:TV.
During today’s This Morning, Friday hosts, Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, popped across to a different ITV studio to catch up exclusively with Ant and Dec during some rehearsals ahead of Saturday Night Takeaway.
When asked if they still get nervous, Ant confessed, “Yes. Always before the first show back. ” Before adding “I’m really clumsy, and the fact I haven’t fallen [down the stairs during the opening shot] in 14 years - so who knows, tomorrow could be the night!”
Dec explained, “We start [working on the series] during the summer, so since last summer coming up with ideas of people we want to hit for undercovers - and Jamie Oliver is our first one for tomorrow night, and he’s been on our list for a couple of years!”
On the prank, Ant explained, “We kind of messed with his day really. Got involved with the photos… and we nearly get caught.” Before adding, “We have sleepless nights before those things, because if he turned round and saw us then the whole thing’s ruined - all those weeks and months of planning.”
Whilst many regular items within the show remain, Ant explained how their challenges this year during Ant versus Dec will differ. “Stephen Mulhern has a time machine, so every challenge will be in a different era…”
Eamonn went on to explain how he obtained an injury during one of the SNT sketches before going on to say, “Having the Eamonn Holmes Cones named after me was the greatest honour of my broadcasting career! But the thing is, people come on and you genuinely have fun and that’s why you attract people - people want to come on your show - because it’s not for the money!”
Dec said, “It’s certainly not! This kind of show I think is needed, on a Saturday you want to get your takeaway and sit in front of the telly and have a laugh… and we’ve got our biggest ever giveaway this year.”
He added, “Last year we ended up taking over two hundred people out to Barcelona and did our last show on a cruise ship, and this year it’s going to be even bigger!”
Ant said, “We’ve topped it, and will reveal it all tomorrow night…"
Dec added, “So all throughout the series, even if you’re at home now, you could still qualify to come with us for our last show which will be somewhere amazing!”
Other highlights they could reveal for tomorrow’s show was Michelle Keegan as their guest announcer, Jennifer Hudson, will do the ‘End of the Show Show’ and This Morning viewers also got to see an exclusive clip of a new sketch called ‘The Missing Crown Jewels’ featuring acting cameos from Michael Sheen, Emilia Fox and Joanna Lumley.
Speaking of the 20th anniversary of SM:TV next year, Dec confessed, “We are talking about maybe doing something if we can get Cat [Deeley] back from America - she’s a big star out in America now - so she might come back if we beg!”
Ruth said, “Well if she doesn’t [come back], I’m free! I can do the sketch thing.”
On receiving their OBEs recently and being separated to collect them, Dec said, “I went first! It’s weird… and you’re just stood there and you can see through to the room and there’s Prince Charles giving out awards, and you’re in the line up and you’ve got to pinch yourself - things like that doesn’t happen to guys like us.”
He added, “I don’t know if we’re role models, but I think we’re an example of two lads from the west end of Newcastle and I suppose we are examples of put your head down, grab any opportunity that comes your way, work hard, make the best of every opportunity and you never know where it’s going to take you… and that’s what we’ve done.”
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV/STV from 10:30 just after The Jeremy Kyle Show.
Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway begins tomorrow night, Saturday 25 February, at 19:00 on ITV/STV.
